Crazy Mercedes-Benz jet-powered drag limousine (37 photos + 1 video)
As for dragsters, this particular example is from Hawaii, disguised as a Mercedes-Benz W126, is one of the most extreme. Under the fiberglass body is a dragster with Westinghouse J34 turbojet with some pretty crazy modifications.
The car has a fiberglass body, consisting of two individual parts. If desired, they can be completely removed, thereby "exposing" the hidden tubular chassis of the dragster.
Outside, the modification is characterized by the presence of a very long hood and conspicuous air intakes on the sides. The latter are located somewhere in in the middle of the body and provide fresh air to the engine.
The roof of the car has a large sunroof, which is a must for professional dragsters. Well, on the stern you can see the massive aluminum spoiler.
Complete the image modification 15-inch multi-pack polished wheels. It is curious that in front they are "shod" in tires Mickey Thompson Racemasters and rear in Goodyear drag slicks.
If outside the car is also trying to look like some kind of civilian model, then his interior is racing. A strong frame is installed inside safety, bucket seat and placed in front of him aluminum tidy.
As in professional motorsport, the steering wheel of such a dragster is made removable. Also, the creators of the unusual machine provided a system firefighting. The car does not have the usual pedals - to the right of the pilot special levers for throttle control are placed, two parachutes and an afterburner.
Of greatest interest is the technical "stuffing" of the dragster: in the movement of such a Mercedes is driven by a turbojet engine Westinghouse J34 1953. It is located at the back and provides additional thrust with the afterburner.
Unfortunately, the characteristics of such a unit are not specified, but later J34 engine models develop thrust in excess of 18 kN. fuel tank modification is located directly under the side of the engine.
But the dragster has neither a transmission nor a differential - since it more than enough thrust from the jet engine. How much for such a car travels a quarter mile (402 meters) drag distance - not to be specified.
Interestingly, a couple of months ago, the modification was exhibited on online auction portal "Bring a Trailer", and with the trailer needed for its transportation. How much it was sold for is unknown.
