A chilling encounter between a diver and a shark off the coast of Australia
An Australian diver shared a video of his eerie encounter with a shark that swam by and 'smiled' at him.
Matt Pryor was swimming off South West Rock, on the mid-north coast of New South Wales, when he came across a gray sand shark. Matt managed to capture this eerie and extremely unexpected meeting at the bottom of the ocean.
In the video, the predator slowly approaches the diver, then throws a sidelong glance at him and opens his mouth, revealing his razor-sharp teeth. Matt didn't take his eyes off the creature until it swam past, then immediately swam away in the other direction.
Gray sand sharks are considered an endangered species due to their massive extermination by fishermen. They are usually found in shallow coastal waters and live along the east and west coasts of Australia. They can reach up to three meters in length and are generally considered to be quite peaceful creatures - although they boast rows of sharp teeth and an intimidating pointed snout, they are not a threat to swimmers.
