A vinaigrette of historical footage from past years. Issue 174

Funny photos, interesting events and people who made history - all this in a new selection.

One of the most exciting journeys into the past is studying old photographs that allow us to see key moments in history, important social phenomena, famous people, their successes and tragedies. Let's take a ride in a time machine and look at a new hodgepodge of interesting historical photos.

A large alligator, Louisiana, 1870s.

This monster weighs almost 400 kilograms, why not a dinosaur.

Sir Jacob Pleydell-Bouverie, Viscount Folkestone and his daughter Anne Pleydell-Bouverie, 1859.

Victorian photographs. The picture was taken near Longford Castle in England. Margaret Pleydell-Bouverie (d. 1924). Her father, Sir Jacob Pleydell-Bouverie (1815-1889), later 4th Earl of Radnor, is standing in profile to the right, at the horse's head.

The Great Blizzard of 1888 in New York.

The photo shows the aftermath of one of the most powerful blizzards in US history. Many cities were heavily snowed in, and the squally wind destroyed everything in its path. Snowdrifts in some places reached a height of 15 meters, which is why many residents could not leave their homes for a week.

Mother and daughter on a swing, late 19th, early 20th century.

Wailing Wall. Jerusalem, 1877.

At first it may seem that Muslims in white robes are praying at the wall with the Jews. In fact, these are Jewish men wearing a tallit.

A tallit is a prayer shawl.

Public disinfectors, England 1877.

Most likely, disinfectors fight bubonic plague or smallpox. At that time, there were a lot of infectious diseases and pandemics.

A cabin in the Las Vegas Valley, USA, 1895.

The man doesn't even suspect that the land he's sitting on will be worth a fortune in a hundred years. In 10 years, Las Vegas will become a city. In 50 years, gangster Bugsy Siegel will open the Flamingo Casino, which will be the first step to the glory of the world gambling capital.

Whales washed up on the beach, early 20th century.

Whitby, England, 1880.

Procession to a ball in Portree, Scotland, 1860s.

It is always fascinating to look at people, their clothes and how they lived 160 years ago.

A Manhattan alley, New York, 1888.

Better known as the "Gangster's Hideout" because it was the most dangerous area on Mulberry Street. Reminds me of the atmosphere of the movie "Gangs of New York".

The London Poster Man, 1877.

A blind man earns extra money as he can.

The courtyard of the Abbey of San Gregorio, circa 1860-1880.

Mailbox. Germany, 1894.

It is not entirely clear why the girls are wearing such nice dresses and barefoot.

Niagara Falls, 1885.

In the entire history of observations, Niagara Falls froze completely only once and that was in 1848. All other times, only partially, as in this photo.

Two gentlemen and their delightful dog, 1890s.

Executioner of Rewa district (Madhya Pradesh). India, 1903.

He can execute with his suit, in case he forgot his sword at home.
