Nigerian boy who dances in the rain will study ballet in New York
11-year-old Anthony Mesoma Madu pulled out his lucky ticket by posting a video of himself dancing in the rain. The school does not have a special gym, so the boy has to train outside. The video quickly gained hundreds of thousands of views.
In Nigeria, ballet is predominantly practiced by girls. Anthony Mesoma Madu breaks down stereotypes and preconceptions about male dancers. “I want them to see me, because when I dance, they will know that there is a men’s ballet,” the dancer was quoted as saying by BBC News.
The video with the participation of the Nigerian boy was also seen by the founders of the ballet school in New York. They offered him a scholarship that would allow him to study for the summer. And Daniel Awoseni, the young dancer’s teacher, had the opportunity to attend an intensive course for teachers for two weeks.
