A dog who spent 11 years sleeping near his owner’s grave has died (5 photos)
The story of a dog named Captain first appeared in the media five years ago: the faithful dog refused to leave his owner’s grave and came to the cemetery every day.
The dog disappeared from the home after the death of Miguel Guzman, who died in 2006 in Cordoba, and the family thought it had simply run away.
Miguel's widow found the Captain a few months later in a cemetery in Carlos Paz. He was near the grave of her late husband.
Together with her son, she tried several times to take the dog home, but the dog categorically refused to go anywhere. They carried him home several times, but the Captain always ran away and returned to the cemetery. Ultimately, the family decided to leave the dog alone and let her decide for herself how she wanted to live.
Cemetery caretaker Hector Baccega said that one day a dog appeared and began to wander throughout the cemetery until it eventually found its owner's grave.
“We don't actually know how he found the grave. After all, his owner died not in Carlos Paz, but in another city - Cordoba. Miguel Guzman died in Cordoba, then he was taken here, to Carlos Paz, for a funeral service in the church, and from there straight to the cemetery. The dog was not here.
There are about 14,000 graves in the cemetery, and the fact that the Captain found exactly the one where his owner was buried, and was buried several months earlier, is truly amazing,” Hector Banegas.
Over the course of several years, the caretakers of the cemetery came to respect and love the Captain for his loyalty. They fed him regularly and invited a veterinarian to give the dog the necessary vaccinations.
The captain died at the age of 15 a few days ago. In the last months of his life, he could hardly see, he walked with difficulty, but still, for 11 years he returned to Miguel’s grave every day.
