A herd of cows crowded around a puddle in which a small seal lay
Briton Ian Ellis is a well-known ornithologist in his country with a passion for wildlife. Not so long ago, thanks to him, rescuers managed to save a real seal from certain death. The scientist was observing birds in the area of Frampton Marshes, located in Lincolnshire, when he saw an unusual sight. The cows grazing next to the swamp showed an insatiable interest in some object.
Everyone knows that these are one of the most inquisitive animals, and Ellis decided to carefully observe this area. It seemed to him that there was a seal in the swamp. Considering that from the swamp along a small river to the open sea there are only a few kilometers, there was nothing surprising in this.
However, it was the increased interest of cows that forced the scientist to pay more attention to the subject of curiosity of domestic animals. Having adjusted his binoculars more sharply, he saw that it was not just a seal, but a small cub, unable to get out of the quagmire on its own. Most likely, it was brought here with the tide, and once in the swamp slurry, the seal pup could no longer get out. The specialist called rescuers, who rescued the animal from captivity.
There they established that the baby was a newborn, she was born some five days ago. And she was orphaned, because of which she had already become hungry and dehydrated. In addition, there were bruises and abrasions, but it was not the cows’ fault, they just handled the baby very carefully. But without the help of people, her chances of survival were zero.
Then the doctors also found a pulmonary infection and work began to boil. For a newborn seal, they made a mixture with a very high fat content, like in the mother's milk of these mammals. She was given a course of antibiotics, bandaged and placed with another baby pinniped, Charlie, who had arrived just a couple of days earlier. The doctors were surprised how trusting and affectionate the little seal was, meekly endured all the procedures and did not try to bite anyone.
A few months later, when the seals had gained weight and grown, they were released into the ocean. They simply opened the cages and they crawled and jumped to their native elements. And they didn’t even stop to wave their flippers at the cows, thanks to whom they had once been saved. What can you do? It’s not easy to be a hero in our world.
