Currently, the Russian nuclear icebreaker fleet includes 7 operating icebreakers, 1 nuclear lighter carrier (barge carrier), 1 withdrawn from the fleet, but retained, the first nuclear icebreaker "Lenin". In addition, a new icebreaker “50 Let Pobedy” is being built at the Baltic Shipyard. This is the world's largest civilian nuclear fleet.
Nuclear icebreakers were built to support ships along the Arctic coast. Icebreakers are used to transport various cargoes, mainly iron ore from Norilsk to the Kola Peninsula, where the ore is transported to processing plants in the Murmansk region. The length of this route is about 3000 km.
