Thousands of Starlings Dance in the Skies Over Scotland (13 photos)

From late autumn to early spring, the Scottish village of Gretna Green plays host to a breathtaking aerial display. Driven from their native Scandinavian breeding grounds by freezing weather, European starlings (Sturnus vulgaris) migrate to Scotland for the winter. Taking flight in massive, cloud-like flocks, they carve mesmerizing, shapeshifting patterns across the sky.

The annual migration of starlings serves as a reminder that winter is on its way, as the birds arrive from colder northern regions to stay until spring. While their wintering range spans much of the southern British Isles, the birds gather in especially large numbers in the small Scottish town of Gretna Green, where these photographs were taken.

Throughout the winter, the starlings put on a daily aerial ballet: about an hour before sunset, vast swarms of birds converge from all across the surrounding countryside.

Every day at sunset during the winter, vast flocks of starlings take to the sky to perform complex, synchronized pirouettes.

Every day at sunset, thousands of starlings take to the skies, twisting and turning in collective pirouettes.

With over a million birds swooping back and forth in massive flocks, onlookers could easily mistake them for a fast-approaching storm cloud.

Having migrated by the millions from Scandinavia to escape the winter freezing temperatures, the birds assemble into astonishing shapes.

Scientists still aren't entirely sure how or why starlings perform these heavenly dances. Even complex algorithmic models struggle to explain the birds' acrobatic feats, as they change direction in a fraction of a millisecond to avoid collisions and evade predators.

Despite this impressive show of force, starling populations in the UK have declined significantly in recent years, likely due to a shortage of nesting sites. Nevertheless, the birds still inhabit Britain's rural pastures, settling down to roost after their evening ballet.

These synchronized aerial maneuvers are so breathtaking that tourists flock to Gretna Green just to watch the evening air show.

Many come to see the sight for themselves as thousands of birds move in unison, sharply turning, diving, and swooping down to earth across a vast expanse.

Moving in perfect harmony, the birds form striking and sometimes whimsical patterns in the sky.
