Solar-Powered EVs Are Coming: World's Top Auto Glass Maker Ready for Mass Production of Solar Roofs (1 Photo)

Fuyao Group, the world's largest automotive glass manufacturer based in China, has confirmed it is ready for the mass production of panoramic roofs with built-in photovoltaics. The solar cells are integrated directly into the laminated automotive glass, converting sunlight into electricity. While it won't be enough to drive the electric motors, it is ideal for running the air conditioning and auxiliary systems.

The technology has already progressed beyond the lab prototype stage. Back in May 2024, Fuyao informed investors that it had established serial production capabilities for the glass, ready to supply it upon customer request. Consequently, this latest announcement points toward a broader commercial rollout. According to the company, the photovoltaic modules are embedded within the glass structure, allowing the voltage and current generated at the p–n junctions to feed directly into the vehicle's onboard power grid.

Chinese media previously linked Fuyao's development to BYD, reporting that the solar roof could be offered as an optional feature for the Han and Tang models at around 8,000 yuan (roughly $1,190). Reports also claimed a peak output of 720 W, a solar cell efficiency of 23.18%, and the use of heterojunction silicon (HJT) cell technology. However, these specs remain unconfirmed, as neither Fuyao nor BYD has released a joint technical spec sheet. During an investor meeting, Fuyao also declined to reveal its clients or pricing details, citing trade secrets.

A passenger car's roof area is far too small for such a system to replace conventional grid charging, but the solar output can still prove very useful for auxiliary onboard systems. While parked, it can power cabin ventilation, onboard electronics, and other low-power functions, helping prevent the main traction battery from draining.

Fuyao is not alone in aiming to harness vehicle body surfaces for solar power generation. European automakers and independent enthusiasts worldwide are pursuing similar goals. This trend is clearly set to gain traction, paving the way for options like solar sunroofs. Retrofits and factory options will likely become available across numerous EV models with minimal hassle.
