People keep all kinds of pets at home, from cats and dogs to teacup pigs and pythons. You would think animal lovers had run out of ways to surprise us. But think again: this year's hottest pet trend in the US is... cows. Not traditional farm animals, of course, but a special miniature breed. These mini cows became a massive hit leading up to the holiday season, with thousands of Americans admitting that a pint-sized bovine tops their Christmas wishlist.

Miniature cows are still a rarity, bred by only a handful of farms across the US. The most famous operation belongs to 27-year-old Ellie Sine, who raises these adorable creatures on her ranch in Wright City, Missouri. Bringing one home doesn't come cheap: prices start at $8,000, with select cows fetching as much as $20,000. Yet demand remains sky-high—Ellie sold 15 animals in the final two months of the year alone.

Miniature cows aren't entirely new; the breed has existed for quite a while, though it previously attracted little attention. Their sudden boom in popularity is directly tied to TikTok, where videos of the tiny bovines regularly rack up millions of views. Unsurprisingly, Ellie Sine runs the platform's most popular account on the subject.

Watching the breeder's videos, it’s easy to see why people are falling in love with them. Petite and fluffy, they look like living stuffed animals. They are also gentle, affectionate, and get along famously with people—especially children. Social media is filled with clips of kids playing outdoors while these mini cows happily trot beside them like puppy dogs.

Fully grown, miniature cows stand between 36 and 42 inches (90 to 107 cm) tall—about a third the size of a standard cow—and rarely weigh more than 550 pounds (250 kg). Yet despite their compact frame and adorable appearance, they are ill-suited for indoor living, let alone apartment life. Still, that hasn't stopped a few brave souls from trying to share a roof with them.

Not Ideal Housemates

Many buyers are misled by viral posts showing influencers seemingly thriving with mini cows in their living rooms. Alyssa Rohra, a 30-year-old ranch owner from Maquoketa, Iowa, shared her thoughts on the trend:

"I’ve seen some very popular creators on TikTok keeping them indoors and doing other completely unrealistic things. In reality, that’s just not how it works. Having a cow—even a tiny one—inside your house isn't practical, and I think those videos are really misleading."

Ellie Sine echoes her fellow rancher's concerns. She recalled one influencer who set up a mini cow pen right in her bedroom, posting videos of herself cuddling and kissing the pet. But as Ellie points out, it's hard to imagine the smell in that room. Sure enough, the content creator eventually admitted she had moved the animal out of her bedroom and into a barn.

Sine takes vetting prospective buyers seriously. Deep pockets alone won't guarantee you a cow; Ellie interviews every potential buyer personally to ensure they have proper accommodations. She also asks about existing pets and prior livestock care experience.

"A lot of people say, 'It’ll be fine, we have a dog.' Those are the people we have to turn away."

The ASPCA emphasizes that miniature cows should only go to individuals who know how to properly care for livestock and treat animals humanely. Of course, mini cows aren't the only adorable bovines taking the country by storm: Iowa breeders are also raising plush-looking "fluffy cows," which have captured hearts across America as well.
