'Harry Potter' Fans Force Power Line Reroute to Save Dobby's Grave (3 Photos)

Fans of the Harry Potter franchise have successfully forced a power line project connecting Great Britain and Ireland to change course after discovering its planned route passed directly through a memorial to the beloved character Dobby.





The Greenlink interconnector project is valued at £430 million, according to the BBC.

It is designed to link the UK's National Grid with Ireland via a 125-mile cable running between County Wexford and Freshwater West. The proposed route crossed a Pembrokeshire beach where the tragic death of the fictional house-elf Dobby was filmed for the movie series.

Project director Simon Ludlam revealed that the cable was originally set to pass right through the memorial site. However, the company received hundreds of phone calls, prompting officials to adjust the route.



He recalled a colleague explaining the reason behind the influx of calls, saying, "Apparently, we are laying a cable right through Dobby’s grave."

"I said, 'Dobby? Who’s Dobby? I don’t know Dobby. It’s a fictional character from a fictional book, it’s all made up—what are you talking about?'" Ludlam said.

Nevertheless, he noted that he consulted with fans of the franchise to work out a new path so the cable wouldn't come anywhere near Dobby's grave.

This power line reroute is not the first time Dobby's grave has been saved.

In 2022, following a public consultation, the National Trust agreed to let the tribute stay on the beach, though it urged visitors to stop leaving gifts.

Fans were asked not to leave socks at the makeshift shrine—composed mainly of inscribed pebbles—because the beach is an environmentally sensitive site.
