Southern Europe is currently experiencing a true apocalypse. What began as a normal hot summer has turned into a nightmare. The British newspaper The Independent is sounding the alarm: abnormally hot temperatures and hurricane-force winds have sparked a firestorm that is destroying homes and forests. 
It all began in late spring. Three extreme heat waves hit southern Europe one after another. There was no rain for weeks. Forests and shrubs were so parched that all it took was a spark to trigger a catastrophe.
In early July, fires erupted in several regions of France and Spain. In just 7-10 days, the area of burned land doubled the long-term average. The situation became critical when temperatures soared to a staggering 40°C...44°C, coupled with a gusty wind. Sparks can ignite kilometer-long walls of flame in minutes.
So, they still can't contain the fires.
In France, authorities ordered an emergency overnight evacuation on the famous Cap Ferret and in other southern regions. More than 10,000 people (including many tourists) were awakened by sirens in the middle of the night. People abandoned tents, belongings, and expensive hotels and fled inland in their pajamas. The sky over the beaches turned crimson.
Bordeaux is under threat, with a complete evacuation of the 300,000-strong city expected to begin as early as this weekend. Interior Minister Núñez urged the army to help extinguish the fires in the Gironde department. The fire in this region is "completely out of control" and is moving toward Bordeaux.
Late last night, French President Macron formally requested the European Union to activate the EU civil protection mechanism to combat the forest fires in France. An emergency meeting with representatives of various ministries was held in Paris overnight at the initiative of Prime Minister S. Lecornu. It is noted that hundreds of thousands of residents could be evacuated in the coming days if the fires cannot be stopped.
Spanish firefighters are also working at the very limits of human capabilities. Wildfires in Spain have reached the capital, Madrid.
Due to devastating wildfires in Spain, the government has declared a "national state of emergency" in two regions. According to a statement from the Ministry of the Interior, this comes into effect immediately for the Madrid region and the nearby province of Avila.
In regions like Guadalajara, fires have already consumed over 32,000 hectares of forest.
To give you an idea of the scale, that's an area the size of hundreds of football fields, transformed into a lifeless wasteland. Centuries-old forests are burning, and new fires are breaking out faster than rescuers can refuel tanks.
An Italian vacation paradise has turned into a trap. Strong winds are throwing sparks hundreds of meters away, setting fire to residential buildings on the outskirts of cities. Dozens of people have suffered burns and toxic smoke. Residents of Sicily are hurriedly fleeing their homes, saving pets and documents.
European countries have scrambled all their emergency aircraft—amphibious aircraft are dropping tons of water on the fires. But strong winds often simply evaporate and blow away this water, preventing the fires from being extinguished.
Forecasters predict no prolonged rainfall in southern Europe. This means the extreme danger level will last throughout August.
