Art or Madness: How fan merch is turning into trash trading (2 photos)
A recent incident near Madison Square Garden became a striking example of the extreme limits of fan obsession. An enterprising artist decided to capitalize on rumors of Taylor Swift's wedding by collecting household trash thrown by passersby into trash bins near the venue. Ordinary trash—from plastic forks and lids to more questionable items like cigarette butts—was hermetically sealed in containers to preserve the "ambiance" and put up for sale for $32 each.
The most striking thing about this story isn't the creation of such "souvenirs," but the willingness of buyers to pay real money for objects that have no direct connection to the singer. Despite the fact that the trash was collected behind a fence, out of reach of even minor celebrities, fans are willing to overlook the lack of connection with their idol. The main argument becomes only the imaginary proximity to the event, which, in the opinion of buyers, justifies the purchase of literally anything - even if this item was thrown away by a random passerby who was simply passing by.
