A decent Chinese official was nicknamed the "Mud Buddha"
A village head decided to evacuate the village due to a sharp rise in water levels after a heavy downpour. He was going door-to-door and nearly died.
In China's Yunnan Province, village head Tian Ruliang became a social media hero after a photo of him completely covered in mud went viral. Users nicknamed him the "Mud Buddha" for saving residents during a heavy downpour and landslide.
On the night of May 18, Tian noticed a sharp rise in water levels and decided to urgently evacuate the village. He went door-to-door, warning people through a loudspeaker. Along the way, the man was swept away by the torrent of water, but managed to cling to a tree and escape.
Despite his injuries and the mud, the head continued the evacuation. Thanks to his actions and the help of volunteers, all 60 residents from 21 families managed to escape the danger zone. A few hours later, a section of the mountain slope, with a volume of about 10 thousand cubic meters, collapsed and covered half the village.
