Large-scale interception scheme: creators of a device for spoofing a mobile network have been detained

Canadian law enforcement authorities have arrested three individuals suspected of creating a device that mimicked a cellular base station. According to investigators, the so-called "SMS blaster" caused phones within range to automatically connect to it, as the device's signal was stronger than that of official cell towers. This allowed phishing messages to be sent without using the subscriber's real numbers. Over the course of approximately six months of operation, the system is estimated to have intercepted approximately 13 million mobile traffic messages.
