20 Celebrities Who Turned Out to Be Very Nice People When We Met Them (21 photos)
Celebrities are often thought of as arrogant and scandalous individuals, but most of them are actually very sweet and pleasant people—at least according to Reddit users who readily share stories of their chance encounters with celebrities, whether they're just casual or not.
Colin Firth
I met him at a cafe; he was with his son. I waited until they finished and were about to leave, then went up to him and asked for an autograph for his mother (she's a big fan). He asked me a few questions about her and wrote a very sweet message especially for her.
He asked if I wanted another autograph for myself, and I told him just meeting him was more than enough. I told him where my mom worked, and the next day he stopped by her work and chatted with her. What a great guy.
Bruce Campbell
F***ing tall and funny. I worked reception at the Newbury Comics corporate office, and he stopped by one day with his assistant.
I didn't even pay attention to his name when the assistant called it out; he simply called the customer Bruce was supposed to meet. And then it dawned on me:
"Wait a second. That Bruce Campbell?"
Bruce is standing to my right, looming over me like death. Then he smiles, extends his hand, laughs, and asks my name. Of course, I made the obligatory joke about the shooting stick, and he laughed at that too.
Robin Williams
Very simple, calm, and smart.
I was working at the Cody's Books booth at ComputerWorld in San Francisco, I think it was 1981, and he was with Timothy Leary, so I was lucky enough to meet them both.
Danny DeVito
I wandered into a hotel bar in Philadelphia with a girl I was hanging out with at the time and her friend. It turned out the cast of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia were filming their tenth (something?) season and were staying at the hotel.
A girl's friend noticed Danny as he walked by, and he ended up sitting with us for two whole hours. He paid for our drinks several times. He tried to invite the girl back to his room—an unexpected turn of events, but he introduced us to Charlie Day, so I still consider that a win.
Mr. Rogers
I was lucky enough to spend six hours next to Mister Rogers on a plane.
I was seven. The best thing that ever happened to me. We were having lunch. I spilled something on him. I thought I'd ruined everything, but he just smiled and gave me his dessert.
Bill Murray
I've only met one celebrity in my entire life—Bill Murray.
He told a joke I didn't understand at the time and gave me the wrong directions to the Asian exhibit at the Dallas Museum of Art. 10 out of 10, I'd ask Bill Murray for directions again.
Scarlett Johansson
I met Scarlett Johansson in 2011 at Starbucks – very nice and funny.
I thought she'd be rude or aloof, partly because it was so early in the morning—maybe five thirty or six. Not at all, she was very sweet. I made her laugh when I told her I was a big fan of one of her early films, Home Alone 3 (it really is one of my favorite childhood movies).
Pierce Brosnan
He literally hit on me at a coffee shop in Hawaii. He was exceptionally polite.
I only recognized him after he had already sat down. I called my wife, and she begged me to go over and give him the phone. Of course, I didn't.
Jeff Goldblum
He was with his wife and children. They were all very kind and sweet to me.
In real life, he's exactly like his on-screen persona.
Alison Brie
I was working at a prestigious hotel in West Hollywood. One day, a beautiful brunette about my age walked in on my shift, along with a pretty blonde and an older woman who I assumed was their mother—or one of them.
She looked familiar, and then it dawned on me that I was serving Annie from Community (Alison Brie), and I'd just recently read about her on Wikipedia. I checked the reservation. Schermerhorn. That's her real name. Before I even realized who she was, I noticed she had this magical aura about her that made everyone within ten feet of her feel special.
I was lucky enough to serve her, and she joked with me like we were old friends. By the end of the day, we were talking in silly accents and laughing like hyenas, and to top it all off, she left a huge tip, and her friend told my boss what a great job I did. It's nice to meet someone you fell in love with on a show and find out they're fucking awesome in real life.
George Takei
I was leaving the cinema and accidentally bumped into a short Asian guy in a white suit.
He turned around and said:
"Oh, my gosh, I'm so sorry."
Then I realized why the laughter from the front row seemed familiar.
Bill Nye
I got a summer job as a concierge in New York. It turned out it was his building.
As a rule, everyone in the building knows the concierge by sight, but I was a stranger. Bill was leaving the building and quickly waved goodbye toward the reception desk, but suddenly stopped abruptly. He turned around and said:
"You're new. What's your name? I'm Bill."
I replied:
"Yes, I'm just here temporarily. Nice to meet you, Bill. I'm so-and-so."
He shook my hand and said:
"Nice to meet you. I'm going to get some Chinese, then I'll be back and continue working on my book."
Then he left and when he came back, he wished me a good day. It was cool that he noticed me and took the time to introduce himself.
Adam Sandler
He's super nice, we met him when we arrived at my aunt's lake house.
He's a really sweet guy, he brought his family, and we spent about three hours with him, just hanging out. He's an awesome guy.
Taylor Swift
I met her after a concert in my city as part of the "1989" tour. She's really nice and easy to talk to—it felt like we were old friends.
But what struck me was that she only recognized the guy standing next to me from his Tumblr blog. She knew his name, a bunch of personal details, and was incredibly happy to meet him. It was really sweet.
Adam Savage
Adam Savage from Mythbusters. I met him at a White House science fair a few years ago and chatted with him for a while.
He was very sweet, pleasant to talk to (and he really does wear a hat everywhere). I told him I became an engineer partly because I watched his show all the time with my dad as a kid, and he was very happy about that. He's a really cool guy. Obama and Bill Nye were also very nice.
John Mulaney
I worked at the front desk at a hotel and once rented out a room to John Mulaney.
He wanted to pay for someone else's room, so he spent about five minutes with me at the counter while I arranged it. He's a really nice guy.
Stan Lee
We were neighbors for a while, and he personally wrote me several letters, which I framed and hung on the wall.
Tom Brady was so-so when I met him, Steven Tyler was very cool and down-to-earth, but Stan Lee was definitely the best.
Gene Wilder
In the '80s, I worked in a pharmacy and was asked to deliver medication to Gilda Radner (Gene's wife)—she was battling cancer at the time. After a very long delay due to a call to her doctor, I finally got the medication, and I went to their house.
On the way, I was very excited about the upcoming meeting with the brightest comedy star of the time. When I arrived, I rang the doorbell, and Gilda answered. I knew she was ill, but I was still struck by how exhausted she looked. I immediately realized she was furious about how long it had taken to get her medicine.
Unfortunately, she took all this anger out on me. I apologized several times (even though the delay wasn't my fault). When she finished and I handed her the medication, she slammed the door in my face. I wasn't angry with her, although I was very upset—this brilliant comedienne was sick and going through such a nightmare... It was a terrible situation, and not at all the meeting I was hoping for.
As I turned away from the door and took a few steps, someone tapped me on the shoulder. I turned around and saw Gene—he explained that his wife was very ill and apologized repeatedly for her behavior. Then he gave me a generous tip and thanked me for the weekend delivery and my work at the pharmacy. I'll never forget that meeting and I treasure the chance to see them both, even briefly and under such difficult circumstances...
John Barrowman
John Barrowman (Captain Jack from Doctor Who and Torchwood and Malcolm Merlyn from Arrow) is super cool and gives amazing hugs.
Clint Eastwood
Clint Eastwood is a great guy, and you'd be indistinguishable from any other old man on the street.
He chatted with me for a bit, we laughed, and then, I tell you, he pulled a peanut out of his pocket, lowered his hand to his shoe level, and a squirrel jumped out of a bush and ate the peanut right out of his hand. It was right outside his office, and it's probably my favorite memory of my entire time working at the studio.
