How was Son Doong Cave discovered?
In 1991, a local resident named Ho Khanh, while trekking through the dense jungle of Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park, stumbled upon something unusual. Amid the thicket yawned the dark mouth of a cave, from which came an ominous roar—the sound of a rushing underground stream. Fear of the unknown stopped him, and the cave entrance remained untouched. Only nearly two decades later, in 2009, did a group of British cavers led by Howard Limbert dare to explore the site. Their discovery shocked the world: Son Doong turned out to be not just a cave, but a veritable underground kingdom. 
What compelled scientists to descend into its dark depths? Curiosity, a thirst for discovery, and a desire to unravel the secrets the cave had held for millennia. Their expedition began a new chapter in the history of Son Doong, transforming it from a forgotten corner of the jungle into a global sensation.
The Enormous Scale of Son Doong
Shon Doong is astounding in its size. The cave stretches for over 5 kilometers, and its total volume is a record-breaking 38.5 million cubic meters. It would take several days to traverse it from start to finish, and navigating it without an experienced guide is virtually impossible. 
Shon Doong is 200 meters high and 150 meters wide. For comparison, the main chamber of the cave could easily accommodate a 40-story skyscraper or even a football field. This space is so vast that it feels like you've landed on another planet, where the laws of nature operate differently.

Scientists are still studying the unique plant and animal species that inhabit the cave, speculating that the cave may harbor as-yet-undiscovered life forms. 
Cave pearls the size of baseballs have also been discovered here, which is quite unusual. Cave pearls form in depressions in the floor under constant dripping. Drops falling from a sufficient height flip tiny calcite balls, preventing them from "attaching" to the base, and provide the material for crystallization. 
Access to the cave currently requires a permit, which is issued on a limited basis—no more than 1,000 such permits will be issued in 2019 and 2020. The tourist season here runs from February to August.
