The blue-footed booby is a beautiful and unusual bird native to the Pacific islands and the west coast of America. The first thing you notice when looking at this bird is its blue, webbed feet. Their color can vary, and sometimes individuals with green feet are found.
The blue color is due to a diet of fish, which is rich in carotenoid pigments. The better the diet, the brighter the color.
Males attract females with their feet, lifting them in turn. Females, however, prefer mates with brighter feet.
However, individuals with green feet are occasionally found. This is not a separate species, but simply a trait related to genetics or diet.
