Late in the match, visiting goalkeeper Everson repeatedly kneed Cruzeiro midfielder Cristian after making a save, sparking a mass brawl between players from both teams. Former Zenit St. Petersburg players Hulk and Gerson also took part in the brawl.
According to eyewitnesses, tensions escalated in the second half due to rough play by the opponents. "It's part of football, especially in such important matches," noted one participant. The incident is currently under investigation by tournament organizers.
