The project was originally conceived as a military SUV for the US Army, but after unsuccessful testing, engineers adapted it for the civilian market. The car was equipped with a 5.2-liter V12 engine from the Lamborghini Countach supercar and a luxurious interior, which was highly unusual for an SUV of the time. Only 328 of these cars were produced during its six-year production run, and its rarity made the LM002 a true collector's item.
