Lamborghini Has Curtailed Development of an Electric Supercar - It Turned Out to Be of No Use to Anyone (7 photos)

With the advent of high-performance electric vehicles, classic supercar makers have found themselves in a difficult position, as they were the first to offer customers comparable performance for much less. The legendary Lamborghini brand initially announced its readiness to launch its first electric supercar by 2029, but is now abandoning these plans due to low demand.

According to The Sunday Times, the Italian automaker's change in plans was announced by CEO and Chairman Stephen Winkelmann. He admitted that Lamborghini's potential customer base shows "nearly zero" interest in purely electric sports cars. For this reason, the company abandoned the idea of releasing a car called the Lanzador at the end of last year. According to Lamborghini's CEO, electric cars don't create the same emotional connection with the owner as supercars powered by internal combustion engines. The noise of the latter plays a significant role in this regard.

Instead of the purely electric Lanzador, the company will offer plug-in hybrids. By the end of the decade, Lamborghini's entire model lineup will be hybrid, but the company will continue to produce internal combustion engines for as long as necessary. Theoretically, as Lamborghini's CEO has indicated, a purely electric sports car could be released under this brand in the future, but only if the time is right.
