Nearly a million Opel cars are being recalled due to "killer airbags" (1) Photo)
Opel has launched a major recall due to potentially dangerous Takata airbags. The affected models include the Astra, Mokka, Zafira, Vectra, Cascada, Meriva, and Signum from 2003-2018.
This recall concerns a possible defect in the driver's airbag inflator. When the airbag deploys, excessive pressure within the assembly can build up, which in some cases leads to rupture of the housing and the spraying of metal fragments into the cabin. Potential consequences include serious injury to the driver and passengers.
Some vehicles have been ordered to temporarily stop driving until repairs are completed. While there is no formal ban on driving in Germany itself, it does apply to certain vehicles previously imported from Southern European countries.
Owners are notified directly when possible; they can also check their vehicle's VIN through the official website or at a dealership. Airbag replacement is free.
The Takata airbag problem remains one of the largest in the history of the automotive industry. Since 2013, tens of millions of vehicles of various brands have been recalled and modified worldwide. The Opel case is yet another reminder that even years later, the consequences of this crisis continue to affect the market.
