Ford Starts Charging for Access to the Trunk in the New Mustang Mach-E (3 Photos)
The world has gone crazy, and automakers seem to have found a new way to milk customers' wallets. Ford decided that a front trunk on an electric car is too luxurious for mere mortals. In the 2026 model year, it was simply... removed from the standard model.
Want to stash charging cables or grocery bags under the hood? Fork out $495. Didn't pay? Get a hole full of wires and a battery instead of a neat plastic storage trough.
Ford claimed that owners "don't use the trunk anyway." They say, "We care about you, we save you money!" However, the base price of the car hasn't gone down for some reason.
The car does have a trunk, there's space for it, but to "activate" it (read: insert a piece of plastic for 5 kopecks), you need to shell out five hundred dollars. Now drivers are waiting for a fee to be introduced for opening the glove compartment or for the ability to lower the window more than 5 centimeters.
Many media outlets and bloggers have drawn parallels with BMW's paid heated seats. While Ford offers a one-time purchase, the decision to lock the car's base seat has sparked a storm of criticism.
