A bluefin tuna weighing nearly 243 kilograms was sold at the annual auction at Tokyo's Toyosu wholesale market in Japan. The price paid for the fish broke a record that had stood for over two decades.
The world's most expensive bluefin tuna, weighing over 242 kilograms, was sold at a prestigious auction in Tokyo for $3.2 million. This is the highest price for a tuna since 1999.
The auction took place on January 5. The fish was caught off the coast of northern Aomori Prefecture.
The fish was purchased by Kiyoshi Kimura, president of a Japanese sushi restaurant chain. In Japan, the businessman is known as the "King of Tuna."
