Optical illusions are visual perceptions that can be misleading, creating an effect that differs from the actual perception of objects or scenes. Optical or visual illusions arise from the way human vision and perception work. They can manifest in various forms, such as distortions of size, shape, color, or movement, causing the viewer to see something different from what it actually is.

We'll now examine the most interesting hidden optical illusions. Some of them can only be seen by squinting. We'll move from simple to more complex.

Charles Allan Gilbert's "All is Vanity"

This painting, titled "All is Vanity," was painted by Charles Allan Gilbert in 1892. It's an optical illusion of sorts. Look closely: what do you see? You can squint a little. The painting depicts a woman admiring her reflection in a mirror.

Illusion on the Kitchen Table

This image was generated by artificial intelligence. If you squint, you can see a hidden optical illusion.

A similar illusion is created in this image using the same method. Simply zoom out from the image. Now it gets a little more challenging:

Contrast Sensitivity Test

This contrast sensitivity test is designed to assess the ability to distinguish objects in conditions of limited visibility, such as low light, fog, or glare. People with high contrast sensitivity easily recognize all the numbers (there are seven in the image), while those with lower sensitivity can only discern the three numbers "528" located in the center of the image. The creators of this optical drawing believe that if a person cannot see all the numbers in the illusion, this may indicate the need for an eye examination. This is especially important if you are a driver.

Stereogram with a Scrambled 3D Object

The next optical illusion is significantly different from the previous ones, as it is a stereogram with a scrambled 3D object. Some people may have difficulty seeing the hidden image.

The simplest method is to bring the image close to your nose and hold it there for a few seconds, without focusing on small details. Then gradually move the image away, while not blinking. Continue moving the image away until it is at arm's length. After this, you can blink, and you should see the 3D object. If this doesn't work, you can try looking "through" the image.

An image that deceives our perception

Notice this woman's nose where the three dots are located. Stare at them for 10-15 seconds, then move your gaze to a light surface such as a wall or ceiling and blink rapidly. This will cause the image to appear in color.

This optical illusion is actually not difficult to see. To do this, squint your eyes or move the screen further away. You'll then see the blonde girl "transform" in the black-and-white image.

Face Illusion

At first glance, it may seem like the face on the left in the image looks angry, while the face on the right looks calm. In this case, move 2-3 meters away from the monitor, or hold your phone screen at arm's length: the faces will then swap.

Encrypted Illusion

Blink again briefly, focusing your gaze on three imaginary dots in the center of this silhouette. Stare at them, trying not to blink, for 10-15 seconds. Then move your gaze to a light surface and blink rapidly.

Hamburger with fries and a patty

It's all very simple: It's not for nothing that they say fast food is bad for you. To see the harm, just squint a little. Optical illusions are often used in art, psychology, and neuroscience to study perception and the peculiarities of visual information processing.
