Toyota decided not to change the design of its models for 9 years (1 photo)
Toyota intends to change its approach to upgrading its models. Previously, the automaker updated vehicles every 4-5 years, but in the 2000s, it extended the cycle to approximately 7 years, and will now do so every 9 years. Instead of major design changes, Toyota will offer significant software updates.
With software updates, Toyota can improve model performance, add new driver assistance systems, and expand the range of features, such as subscription-based services. This will allow for longer vehicle production cycles, stabilize supply, and make pricing more flexible.
However, some Toyota dealers in Japan have expressed dissatisfaction with the automaker's new approach. They believe that price revisions amid an extended vehicle life cycle could reduce margins. Toyota, for its part, assures that average wholesale prices will remain stable over the nine-year period.
Some automakers are taking a similar approach. For example, Tesla hasn't updated the Model S or Model X platform since their launch.
