An Australian Forest of Californian Redwoods with a Touch of Magic (35 photos + 1 video)
The art of branch weaving lends a mystical touch to this majestic Australian forest.
Thousands of California redwoods, arranged in neat rows, reach skyward in an Australian forest far from their home. Slender as sentries, they reach heights of 55 meters. Sunbeams filter through their branches, playing with reflections on the ground and illuminating whimsical portals and enormous nests scattered among the trees.
A walk through the California redwood forest in East Warburton feels like a journey into a magical realm. Here you'll encounter bird's nests so large that even dragon eggs would seem dwarfed, and mysterious circles woven from twigs, reminiscent of gateways to other worlds. These installations, created from twigs and branches, enhance the forest's magical allure, bringing a touch of mystical fantasy to a thicket originally planted for purely practical purposes.
The trees were planted in the 1930s as part of a revegetation program. They were staggered in the hopes that they would help control weed growth on previously cleared land. The Melbourne Water Board later used the forest for research.
Although these studies are long since completed, the redwood forest remains a place for experimentation, now of a creative nature. Works by artist David Digaponi can often be found among the trees. His creations, created by weaving together fallen branches, ignite a spark of magic in this majestic, austere, and orderly forest.
