Kiribati is an island nation. In the 18th century, explorers lacked the patience to name the small islands, so they remained so. Poland, Paris, London, and Banana are cities on Christmas Island. Kiribati, in fact, consists of 33 islands spread over 5,000 kilometers in the middle of the ocean, and thus for a long time straddled four hemispheres. To avoid confusion, in 1995 the International Date Line was bent to encompass all the islands.
