1. Two Kashmiri guards with photographer James Ricalton at the Delhi Durbar in British India (1903)
The Delhi Durbar was the name given to large-scale events held in Coronation Park in Delhi to mark the coronation of the kings and queens of the British Empire. The Durbar (meaning "royal court") was held in 1877, 1903, and 1911. Queen Victoria ascended the throne in 1837, but did not become Queen of India until 1877. In 1903, Edward VII was crowned in Delhi, and George V became the only emperor to attend his Indian coronation in person; the others were crowned in absentia. Edward VIII abdicated too quickly, and there was no time to crown him. Then, World War II and the Indian independence movement prevented the Durbar from taking place.
