The European Union may soon ban the sale of filtered cigarettes. This initiative will be discussed at a World Health Organization conference in Geneva in November. According to Bild, the EU Council's draft decision for the WHO meeting recommends banning filtered cigarettes to reduce the appeal of the most common and popular tobacco products. It also notes that a ban on e-cigarettes would be an "additional regulatory option."

"A ban on the production, import, distribution, and sale of filtered cigarettes would make a significant contribution to tobacco control," states the WHO recommendation, which the EU Council endorsed.



It is noted that the WHO recommendations, supported by the EU Council, will have serious consequences for tobacco sales in Europe. Potential amendments to the Tobacco Products Directive would amount to a complete ban on cigarette sales in the EU, since almost all cigarettes (approximately 95%) are produced with filters.

It should be added that the WHO has recently been proposing some rather strange and radical measures to combat harmful habits. In early July, the organization proposed that all countries increase prices on alcohol, cigarettes, and sweets by at least 50% by 2035. WHO experts believe this measure will help curb the spread of chronic diseases and generate critical budget revenues for countries.
