Nicole Kidman Found the Perfect Way to Get Her Husband to Stop Drinking, but Even It Didn't Save the Couple from Divorce (4 photos)

It turns out Nicole Kidman is not only a talented actress, but also a generous supporter of sobriety.

She paid her husband, Keith Urban, $600,000 a year to keep him sober. It turned out to be a rather expensive husband-subscription.

Their story began in 2005, when Kidman, despite Urban's reputation as a famous country singer with addictions, decided to marry him. Before their wedding, the couple signed an unusual agreement: if Urban stayed sober for a year, he would receive a substantial bonus. After the ceremony, Kidman wasted no time in sending him to rehab to cement his success.

During their 19-year marriage, which is rumored to be headed toward divorce, Urban could have earned around $11 million simply for his sobriety. Media outlets, including Page Six and The Sun, speculate that the contract was part of a prenuptial agreement, with Kidman acting as a gatekeeper to protect her husband from relapse.

Urban, as he himself admitted in a 2010 interview, struggled with addiction since his youth, and his wife's support became his salvation. However, now, with the divorce announcement, not only emotions but also financial details are being discussed: these payments could become a subject of dispute in court.

The couple is raising two daughters, and Kidman, as Hollywood Life reported, has always emphasized that family is her priority. But rumors persist that the sobriety payment could have caused tension. Urban, on the other hand, publicly thanked his wife for her support, though he acknowledged that his struggles were his own.

Nicole Kidman filed for divorce from Keith Urban on September 30, 2025, after 19 years of marriage, citing "irreconcilable differences" in the documents. According to sources, the couple quietly separated early in the summer: Urban bought a separate home in Nashville and was rumored to have already begun a relationship with a younger woman in the music industry, which shocked Kidman and was the final straw.

The actress tried to save the marriage, but Urban expressed dissatisfaction with the lack of intimacy due to their busy schedules—she was filming, he was touring with the High and Alive World Tour. Urban's friends believed a breakup was inevitable, and Kidman felt betrayed. They had previously agreed on custody of their daughters (Sunday Rose, 17, and Faith Margaret, 14), with Kidman as the primary parent.
