A Very Strange Lamborghini Concept to Be Auctioned (20 photos)
Broad Arrow Auctions will auction off a Lamborghini prototype called the Pregunta on October 10th. The concept, whose strange appearance was designed by Heuliez, was the Italian brand's last project before the company was acquired by Audi. The unique supercar, created 27 years ago, is expected to fetch between €2.5 million and €3.5 million.
The Pregunta is based on the Lamborghini Diablo chassis and is powered by the same 5.7-liter V12 engine with a five-speed manual. The concept's new body and interior were developed by French designers, who were said to be inspired by the Dassault Rafale aircraft. The cockpit canopy with removable panels, in particular, was inspired by aviation.
Auctioneers claim that the futuristic interior's contents anticipated 21st-century supercar technology. The Pregunta features, among other things, a digital instrument cluster borrowed from Formula 1, a navigation system, and rearview cameras in place of side mirrors. The concept was capable of movement and comparable in performance to its donor chassis. It accelerated from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 3.9 seconds and reached a top speed of 333 km/h (208 mph).
In 1998, almost simultaneously with the project's completion, Lamborghini came under Audi's control, and the Pregunta was never developed further. However, the Heuliez studio displayed the supercar at various exhibitions until 2008, after which it was sold to a private owner. This didn't stop Lamborghini from displaying the concept car for a time in the factory museum, providing it with a certificate of authenticity.
