One of the most famous fashion designers of our time, Giorgio Armani, has died in Italy at the age of 91. This was reported by the billionaire couturier's company.

"Mr. Armani, as he was always called with respect and admiration by his employees and partners, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loved ones. "He worked tirelessly until his last days, devoting himself to the company, its collections and the varied and ever-changing projects, both current and ongoing," La Repubblica reports a statement from the Armani company.

The media also reports that Armani's death was caused by the consequences of the coronavirus - the designer was diagnosed with a lung infection several weeks ago. The farewell to the couturier will take place in Milan on September 6-7, in the building of the Armani Theater (Teatro Armani), but the funeral will be held behind closed doors.

Armani was born on July 11, 1934, in the northern Italian city of Piacenza, located near Milan. He began his career as a designer during his military service, designing windows at the Milan department store La Rinascente. He later joined the fashion house Nino Cerruti. He made his debut as an independent and promising couturier at the age of 40, in 1974, during a fashion show at the Palazzo Pitti in Florence. A year later, together with his partner Sergio Galeotti, he founded his own house, Giorgio Armani SpA, which eventually became one of the leading ready-to-wear brands in the world. In the same 1975, he presented his first men's clothing collection. Soon, women's clothing lines appeared, and then the brand began to produce perfumes, cosmetics, children's clothing and home goods.

Today, there are more than 500 stores of the company in the world, which develops several brands at once: Armani Privé (high fashion), Giorgio Armani (the main brand of ready-to-wear), Emporio Armani (for a young audience) and Armani Exchange (for the mass market).

Among other things, Armani's business includes two hotels in Milan and Dubai, 26 restaurants around the world, ownership of the Olimpia Milan basketball club and the development of uniforms for the Italian Olympic and Paralympic teams. According to Forbes magazine, Giorgio Armani's fortune is at least $12 billion.
