What abilities did Riddick really have? And why he always survived (10 photos)

It is worth admitting that Richard B. Riddick is one of the most charismatic heroes of science fiction in recent years. After all, the entire franchise that grew up around this character could not have appeared if Riddick had not been interesting to the audience





In numerous films, comics and video games, Riddick has survived a huge number of all kinds of dangers, defeated terrible enemies, including superhumans, monsters and entire organizations. Riddick is especially famous for his ability to escape even the most secure prisons.

There is no way an ordinary person could have accomplished all of these feats, and Riddick certainly wasn't ordinary. He definitely had unique abilities and powers that made him so exceptional.

However, the nature and limits of these abilities were not directly stated, so I thought it would be interesting to dedicate a separate article to them. So, what was Riddick's uniqueness? Let's find out!



Let's start with Riddick's incredible physical abilities





In addition to his supernatural abilities, which we'll discuss below, Riddick was in excellent physical condition and was an outstanding fighter even when he wasn't using his eyes.

Riddick was stronger, faster, more agile, more durable, and more resistant to damage and injury. He had sharper senses, immense endurance, and superior regeneration compared to most humans, and this was demonstrated on more than one occasion.

A very notable testament to his durability was shown in "Riddick", where Riddick hit his head hard on a rock while confronting the Mud Demon, but ultimately emerged from the fight with no visible injuries or signs of a concussion.

Riddick also had an abnormally high pain threshold, and psychologically converted the pain he did feel into anger.

His ability to deal with toxins was also enhanced; When a team of mercenaries attempted to incapacitate him with horse tranquilizers, it took four darts to stop Riddick from running, and he remained conscious until he was hit in the head.



Riddick's hand-to-hand combat abilities were a mix of Krav Maga, Hapkido, Escrima, and Ninjutsu. He used his impressive fighting skills to fight both monsters and humanoids. He was able to hold off the Lord Marshal of the Necromongers himself and even wound him, something the Lord Marshal admitted had not happened in a long time.

But this is just the tip of the iceberg of his true powers.

Riddick's Unique Intelligence



Despite his harsh upbringing and cruel nature, Riddick, as it turned out, had a certain inclination towards deductive thinking.

He quickly guessed what happened to the original inhabitants of the mining base where he and the other survivors of the crash were, and also found the creature's blind spot in the "Black Hole".

He was also able to quickly assess quality and find even minor flaws in most weapons, down to the smallest detail.



His only weakness (other than his sensitivity to light, which caused him to experience pain in daylight without his glasses) was his attachment to children and anyone who truly loved him (these people became his friends), which led to his capture by the bounty hunter Jones.

In addition to his analytical abilities, Riddick was generally a keen judge of character, especially the dark side of human nature. As a murderer himself and having been in and out of several maximum security prisons, he could often predict a person's negative impulses before they acted on them.

For example, he correctly predicted which members of the group in the Black Hole would turn on each other (specifically, that Jones would try to trick Frye) and that the mercenaries and Crematorium guards would turn on each other before his escape attempt.

Riddick's Inhuman Willpower



One of Riddick's most powerful traits was his unbreakable will. Despite finding himself in situations where the chances of survival and/or escape seemed slim, Riddick always moved forward and never gave up.

Having faced several beings far stronger than he or any other human, he has shown himself capable of evading, killing, and even taming them. He has escaped from prisons when most prisoners have resigned themselves to bondage.

When the quasi-dead Necromongers attempted to mentally probe Riddick, he not only resisted, but struck back. The quasi-dead's containers actually exploded from the strain of trying to "process" Riddick.

Perhaps even more impressive was his ability to resist Lord Marshall's attempt to steal his soul.

And now we come to the most interesting part - Riddick's supernatural powers

Riddick's unique eyes - how did he get them and what is their power?



Riddick's eyes developed night vision, allowing him to see and detect objects in pitch darkness. The downside to these eyes was that he was highly sensitive to light and unable to properly see through too much of it.

According to one of the comics, Riddick received glowing eyes as a result of surgery in prison to avoid trouble after an encounter with humanoids called "Glowworms".

The eye implant surgery was performed by a veterinarian aboard the prison complex.

But in the video game Escape from Butcher Bay (which served as a prequel to Pitch Black), it was revealed that Riddick's glowing eyes were not the result of surgery. A ghostly voice informed Riddick that he had been "blind for too long" and that he would receive a gift. It was at this point that Riddick received the eye upgrade.

The mysterious voice belonged to a character named "Shira," who apparently served as a sort of spiritual mentor to Riddick, helping him awaken his dormant Furian abilities. She was the one who actually "bestowed" Riddick with those eyes.

"Wrath of the Furies" is a unique ability of Riddick



In addition to helping Riddick unlock his potential, Shira also allowed or helped Riddick discover his ability to release a kind of energy wave.

This was shown in the Director's Cut of The Chronicles of Riddick after she placed her hand on Riddick's chest, leaving a glowing blue imprint, and said:

"This mark contains the wrath of an entire race... but it will hurt."

She immediately unleashed a powerful blast of blue energy from Riddick (or Riddick did it under her direction), killing a group of surrounding Necromongers.

This ability was also shown in Escape from Butcher Bay.

But Riddick's most unique feature was his personality - here's why.

Riddick's greatest strength: his sociopathic survivalist personality



Riddick was often called a sociopath. He never felt remorse for the murders he committed, and he showed little empathy for those around him.

However, Riddick would be more accurately described as a "beast", as his crimes were committed out of a ruthless desire to survive rather than for the sake of killing. At times, he even referred to himself as an animal. Due to the fact that he had felt the rage of his species since childhood, Riddick's mental state regularly reached its limits.

However, despite this, Riddick's personality was more reflective of a true survivor. He did whatever it took to survive, and killed anyone who tried to take his life or freedom. At the same time, he was not without a certain amount of morality, and refused to kill anyone he did not consider a threat to himself.

But if Riddick allowed someone close enough, that person would be under his protection. Notably, Riddick also had compassion for children, as he was willing to risk his life to help Kira and Lynn.

He also expressed deep regret and sadness when Kira sacrificed herself for him.

All these unique features - physical, intellectual, supernatural and psychological - ultimately turned Riddick into an unkillable hero and "the chosen one".
