At the moment, four people are known to have died, but there is a high probability that there will be more victims.

The Jakarta Post, citing rescue agency spokesman Nuriadin Gumeleng, reports: "According to the North Sulawesi Search and Rescue Agency, a major fire broke out on the Barcelona ferry at around 12:00 (09:00 Moscow time) when the ship was near Talisay Island, about 60 kilometers from the provincial capital, Manado, where it was heading. A number of passengers (exact figures are not specified - ed.) were rescued and evacuated to the nearby island of Ganga."

It is known that the Barcelona ferry serves one of the busiest sea routes in the province. It connects Manado with neighboring islands, including the Talaud and Sangihe archipelagos, and is therefore very popular with both locals and tourists. The ship is not old at all - it was launched in 2021.

One of the passengers, Abdul Rahmad Agu, survived with a small child and launched a live broadcast on social media. The man repeats: "Help, KM Barcelona V is on fire. There are still many people on board. We are on fire at sea, we need help and quickly."

A rescue operation has been launched. A temporary aid station has been set up in the port of Manado for doctors to examine all the survivors, the report also says. It is known that about 150 people were rescued by the efforts of emergency services and fishermen. So far, four have died, the rest of the passengers are apparently missing. The causes of the fire that occurred on the ship are still unknown, local media write.

The Jakarta Post recalls that this incident occurred 16 days after another tragedy, when a passenger ferry sank in the Bali Strait, leaving about half of the passengers and crew dead or missing.
