Unavipa Canyon: a gorge with two mouths (6 photos)
In the western part of the American state of Colorado, there is a unique canyon called Unaweep, which cuts through the Uncompahgre Plateau, a high-mountain section of the Colorado Plateau with an average altitude of about 3,000 meters. 
This is the only large canyon in the Colorado River basin where there is no river itself. Instead, two small streams flow through it, in opposite directions. The place where they separate is the barely noticeable Unaweep watershed, making this canyon the only one in the world with two mouths. 
East Creek flows east to the Gunnison River near Whitewater, and West Creek flows west to the Dolores River near Gateway. Between these points, the canyon stretches for 70 kilometers, reaching a depth of almost a kilometer and a width of up to 6 kilometers. 
Geologists believe that such a scale could not have been created by current streams. The main hypotheses:
The canyon was washed out by the Colorado or Gunnison rivers, which then changed their course.
This is an ancient paleocanyon, rediscovered by the waters of the Gunnison. 
The glacial origin version is unlikely due to the insufficient height and the lack of traces of Pleistocene deposits. 
Today the canyon is privately owned. Its lands belong to ranches and homeowners. In the early 20th century, a freight trail for transporting radium ore passed through here, which later became a highway.
