Caution! The post contains shocking material. Make sure you really want to see it and you are over 18 years old.

A Taiwanese man soaked his feet in dry ice for 10 hours to defraud insurance companies, resulting in… You guessed it: a double amputation.

Dry ice looks like tofu

A man named Zhang was an undergraduate student in Taipei. Between 2005 and January 2023, he purchased multiple insurance policies from five different companies for different types of insurance, including health insurance, life insurance, accident insurance, long-term convalescence insurance, and travel insurance. In 2023, in an attempt to collect the insurance money, Zhang conspired with a former classmate surnamed Liao. The two con men bought dry ice in New Taipei City and returned to Liao's apartment, where Zhang dipped his bare feet into a bucket filled with dry ice.

Note the plastic ties

And his friend Liao tied him to the chair with plastic straps so that he wouldn't break free if the pain became too unbearable. And so Zhang sat for 10 hours! From 2 a.m. to noon. His friend even filmed and took pictures (for some reason). Only two days later did Zhang decide to go to the emergency room. There he was diagnosed with severe frostbite below both calves, as well as bone necrosis, sepsis, and rhabdomyolysis.

I think it's Liao, how could Zhao walk on his own two feet?

Fourth-degree frostbite led to the amputation of both legs. The deed was done, there was no turning back. And the couple falsely claimed to insurance companies that Zhang was riding a motorcycle late at night when his feet suddenly froze, causing severe frostbite (!!!). They filed claims under 8 policies with 5 insurance companies, seeking a total of NT$41.26 million.

In Taiwan, it is not uncommon for those who have the money to take out multiple insurance policies

And one company even paid out NT$236,427, while the other four found discrepancies and rejected the claims. All five insurance companies later reported the case to the police. This led to charges of fraud and aiding and abetting intentional self-harm resulting in serious injury. And for all this, Zhang was given a two-year prison sentence, suspended for two years. Liao was found to be the mastermind, and was given a six-year prison sentence.

They gave him two years of rehabilitation, but it's still like sitting in prison without a leg?

The court ruled that it was Liao who organized this scheme, and Zhang suffered enormous pain from the damage caused. That's why he even reached an agreement with the insurance company. Do you know what's most ironic? The average minimum temperature in the coldest month of winter in Taiwan is... 14 degrees! Warm! Yes, it drops a little lower at night, but still, at positive temperatures, ice and frostbite from it are physically impossible!

And did you remember we had a tragedy with a pool with dry ice, in which people were poisoned and died?

In Taiwan, they sometimes like to cheat with insurance and it is generally accepted to have several insurance policies, especially for those who ride motorcycles. But this is an incredibly stupid Chinese.
