How 15 actors of "Avatar" looked without makeup and graphics (15 photos)
A selection of two parts of the film. Enjoy watching
Sam Worthington – Jake Sully
Initially, the role of Jake Sully was offered to Matt Damon, and the conditions were such that it was impossible to refuse such an offer under any circumstances – Matt was promised 10% of the film's box office, which would have allowed him to receive 250 million. However, Damon was busy with other filming and therefore refused. He was replaced by the little-known Sam Worthington, who, naturally, was not offered any percentage. However, Avatar brought him more – worldwide fame, numerous roles in other films and a place in the Avatar sequels. However, Worthington failed to take full advantage of this opportunity. Apart from Avatar, he is known only for the films Terminator: Salvation and Clash of the Titans, but it seems that Avatar gave him everything he wanted.
Sigourney Weaver – Keery
In the first part of Avatar, Sigourney Weaver played Grace Augustine, but in the next film she got a different role – Keery, who was born from Grace’s avatar. It is noteworthy that this is not the first collaboration between Sigourney Weaver and James Cameron. They worked together on Aliens back in 1986, but James was a little-known director at the time, while Weaver was a big movie star with Alien and Ghostbusters under her belt.
Stephen Lang – Miles Quaritch
Stephen Lang, who debuted in Avatar as Colonel Miles Quaritch, found himself in a similar situation to Sigourney Weaver, and in the sequel he got the role of his avatar, who had all of Miles' memories. Interestingly, Stephen's return was not a situational decision by James Cameron or the studio. As it turned out, the director had planned from the very beginning to make Quaritch the main antagonist of the entire film series, so he understood that the colonel would appear not only in the first film, but most likely in all subsequent ones. Despite the fact that Lang began his acting career back in 1985, he received recognition after Avatar and especially the film Don't Breathe, which was so popular with the audience that it received a sequel with a more in-depth disclosure of Stephen Lang's character.
Joel David Moore – Norman Spellman
Joel David Moore began his career in the first half of the 2000s and made a name for himself in comedies, when he starred in Dodgeball and The Boy for Three. In addition, he also appeared in the horror film Hatchet, but this was not the best experience, so Joel concentrated more on comedy films, although he continued to experiment with other genres. One of these experiments turned out to be extremely successful - his role as Norman Spellman in Avatar brought him not only limited popularity, but also a place in two sequels.
Zoe Saldana – Neutry
Zoe Saldana is one of the actresses whose films have grossed the most money at the box office. Zoe's films have earned over 15 billion, and this includes not only Avatar and Avatar: The Path of Water, but also Star Trek, the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy, Avengers: Endgame, and Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. It is noteworthy that the last film was one of the first for Zoe as an actress, but because of it she almost left the cinema, because she was disappointed in the filming process due to some of her colleagues, who were divided into groups and treated others much worse. But, despite this, Zoe continued to act and became one of the most famous actresses. In 2011, she also starred in the film "Colombiana" - few people know that initially it was supposed to be a sequel to "Leon" with Natalie Portman, but due to a confluence of circumstances it received its own story, independent of others.
Cliff Curtis - Tonowari
Columbiana also starred Cliff Curtis, who played Emilio. And in Avatar: The Path of Water, he played Tonowari, to whom Jake and his family came for help. Although Columbiana helped his career, he received recognition ten years before this film, and also thanks to a crime film - Training Day with Denzel Washington and Ethan Hawke, whose character Cliff's antihero almost made out with right in the bathtub. In addition, Curtis is known for the films The Meg, The Last Airbender, Die Hard 4.0, Breath of the Storm and Runaway Jury, and fans of TV series know him from Fear the Walking Dead. At the same time, he took a short break from TV series and returned only in 2024 with the role of Poseidon in "Kaos", and a little later he got a place in "War Chief" with Jason Momoa.
CCH Pounder - Mo'at
For CCH Pounder, appearing in "Avatar: The Path of Water" was a slight exception, because after 2010 she began to appear in big films much less often. Many knew her from the film "Baghdad Cafe", but subsequently, her most significant popularity was brought by such series as "The Shield", "NCIS: New Orleans", "The X-Files", "ER", "Sons of Anarchy" and "Warehouse 13".
Laz Alonso - Tsu'tey
Despite the fact that Laz Alonso starred in several films and series every year since 2002, the general audience learned about him only in 2009 with the release of "Fast and Furious 4", in which he played the main antagonist Phoenix Calderon. At the same time, he also flashed in Avatar as Tsu'tey, and a year later played in the series Southland. Later, Alonso played in Breakout Kings for two years, returned for a cameo in Fast and Furious 6 and again declared himself in 2019 thanks to the series The Boys.
Wes Studi - Eytukan
Wes Studi comes from the Cherokee people, and because of this, a huge number of his roles are associated with Indians. Studi has appeared not only in Westerns, such as Heat, Love Song, Deep Rising, and Homeward Bound, but many people only learned about him thanks to Westerns, including Hostiles with Christian Bale, Geronimo: An American Legend with Gene Hackman and Matt Damon, The Last of the Mohicans with Daniel Day-Lewis, and Dances with Wolves with Kevin Costner. In 2020, for all his achievements in big cinema, Wes was even ranked 19th on the list of the greatest actors of the 21st century.
Peter Mensah – Akwei
Peter Mensah began practicing martial arts as a child, and became interested in acting in school. He later put the two together and became an action actor who plays the most violent characters. His selected filmography over 30 years of film work includes 300, The Devil's Conspiracy, Spartacus: Gods of the Arena, Spartacus, The Incredible Hulk, Gladiator 2, and G.I. Joe: Retaliation: Snake Eyes.
Kate Winslet – Ronal
In 2015, Tom Cruise set a record among actors for the longest continuous freediving time when he played in a long underwater scene in the film Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation. Tom Cruise is no stranger to setting records, but this one didn’t last long, and was broken by someone who has long been on first-name terms with water. While Cruise lasted 6 minutes underwater, Kate exceeded his record by almost a full minute. However, she had not prepared for this since 1997, when she was just getting used to the water filming in Titanic, which was much harder because the water on the set was very cold and forced several members of the film crew to undergo treatment, because their bodies could not cope with such pressure. It is noteworthy that Kate herself was among these members. And compared to Titanic, Avatar: The Way of Water ultimately seemed like a cakewalk to her, because James Cameron decided not to repeat his old mistake and began working only with warm water.
Bailey Bass – Cyreya
It is interesting that if it were not for Kate Winslet, Tom Cruise's record would still have dropped to second place, because the young actress Bailey Bass lasted under water for six and a half minutes. "Avatar: The Way of Water" was her first film. Before that, Bailey managed to star only in the series "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit" in one episode and in "Interview with the Vampire" as Claudia. However, Bailey lasted only one season in "Interview with the Vampire" and left due to being very busy.
Jamie Flutters – Neteyam
Unlike Bailey Bass, Jamie Flatters, who played Neteyam, had more significant experience in cinema, and he not only acted, but also worked as a director, making short films. On the small screen, he made his mark in the series "So Awkward" and "Liar", and on the big screen, he was lucky enough to star in "Battle on the Scheldt". Although Jamie became even more famous thanks to the second part of "Avatar", he did not rush to move into big cinema, but continued to make short films.
Britain Dalton – Lo'ak
It is noteworthy that Britain Dalton did not even intend to become an actor. He was found literally on the street and offered to play the lead role in a short student film. Dalton agreed, and a little later played a cameo role in Ready Player One. But this was not his limit, because four years later he pleased his family with a role in Avatar: The Path of Water, and a year later he appeared as Jim Shepard in Dark Harvest.
Trinity Bliss – Tuktirey
Trinity Bliss' parents worked in biotechnology, but she became interested in something completely different - as a child, Trinity began performing in productions at theater camps and in 2021 this led her to a cameo appearance in "Mr. Corman" with Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and the following year she exceeded all her expectations by playing in "Avatar: The Path of Water."
