Police tried to detain a graduate during a graduation ceremony at the University at Buffalo in New York. The reason? He went on stage with his young son.
Jean-Paul Al Arab was caught up in chaos during a graduation ceremony last week. Instead of walking across the stage, the graduate was forced to run from police. All because he went out to receive his diploma with his son.
First, the university accused the graduate of violating protocol and repeatedly ignoring instructions not to bring the child on stage. Then they questioned the child's academic abilities.
"Despite the fact that the child came on stage in a cap and gown, he has not yet earned enough credits to receive a diploma. We hope to see him on stage in 20 years, when he follows in his father's footsteps," the school wrote in a statement.
Al Arab was supposed to receive a bachelor's degree in criminology and complete his studies on May 18. He asked in advance if he could walk on stage with his son. They said, "Nobody's going to turn you down."
But on the day of the event, the organizers didn't want to let the little boy in, citing a rule that only graduates are allowed on stage.
"They said it was a security risk," Al Arab said.
That's when he had to choose: obey the rule or keep his promise — and he chose the latter.
"And I ran, that's what I did. I had to. I promised my son that I would walk on stage with him."

The audience burst into applause when the father received his diploma. However, the university expressed dissatisfaction: “Despite the fact that the appearance of the graduate with a baby in his arms caused joy in the audience, his actions violated the rules. Only graduating students can participate in the diploma ceremony. They are allowed to walk in the procession and go on stage.”

The video, which has been viewed more than six million times, shows a man running across a stage with a baby in his arms, desperately evading police and event staff.
"I'm a full-time student, working two jobs, one at night. During the day I take care of my son while his mother works. And here I am, graduating from university, with my boy by my side. We did it," Jean-Paul wrote in the caption of the video.

The next day, the graduate sent a letter in which he apologized to the organizers of the event. He was assured that he would not be punished for the incident and would receive his diploma. The man plans to continue his education at the University of Buffalo and get a master's degree.
