On the west coast of India in the state of Gujarat is the world-famous city of Alang. It is home to the world's largest ship breaking yard.

There are almost 200 breaking sites on the 14-kilometer coastline, where about 50,000 workers work, manually dismantling more than a third of the world's decommissioned ships.

Every year, over 1 million tons of scrap are extracted from Alang, and furniture and other items from the ships are sold at the nearby market.
