It's Official: Magnetic Storms Are Over (3 photos)

I have good news for you, you can breathe easy for the next few years.

Astronomers really pleased with their latest statement, weather-sensitive people can now live in peace. And all because this year the Sun reached its peak activity, now the celestial "bright star" will calm down for at least 7 years. The peak activity of the 11-year solar cycle, during which our native star is in an active state, has passed. In connection with this, in the next year or two there will be a beginning of a decrease in solar activity.

The 11-year solar cycle is often called the "sunspot cycle" because the number of dark spots on our home star waxes and wanes on either side of solar maximum. This time-lapse image shows all the sunspots in August 2024.

The number of sunspots, flares, and magnetic storms will gradually decline, so take a deep breath and prepare to live in peace. Congratulations.

We are approaching the end of the maximum phase of the current sunspot cycle, Solar Cycle 25 (SC25). This peak was very active and included some extreme space weather events, such as a super-powerful geomagnetic storm in May 2024 that triggered some of the most widespread auroras in the last 500 years. However, this surge in activity was not initially expected. Here's a surprise from our Sun.

During maximum solar activity, coronal mass ejections (CMEs) most often occur on the Sun and collide with the Earth's magnetic field, causing bright polar lights.

So those who sincerely expected that due to another magnetic storm, satellites would go down the drain, and humanity would return to the Stone Age, sorry, you will have to wait a little longer.

The rest of us, prepare new excuses for everyday life.
