97-year-old Galapagos tortoise becomes a mother for the first time (2 photos + 1 video)

At the Philadelphia Zoo, a 97-year-old Galapagos tortoise named Mommy gave birth to her first offspring.





Mommy was in no hurry to lay eggs. Since 2023, she has laid three clutches, but none of them resulted in the birth of babies.

It was only at the age of 97 that the tortoise and her chosen one, 90-year-old male Abrazzo, were able to give birth to offspring.

The couple gave birth to four turtles.



Galapagos tortoises are considered the largest in the world. Males weigh about 225 kg, and females - more than 100 kg. These tortoises can live 100 or even 200 years.

"New offspring are extremely important for the protection of this species," said Lauren Augustine, director of herpetology and birds at the Philadelphia Zoo.

Currently, Mama's babies are being monitored by scientists, but they may soon be shown to the public. It is noted that the first few years of the turtles will live with their parents, and then they will be sent to other zoos and sanctuaries so that they can continue to reproduce.
