Chen Zhao, the owner of a Chinese calligraphy studio in Wuhan, Hubei Province, used his skills to pay off his parents' debts of 20 million yuan, or about 2.8 million US dollars, in seven years.
It is noted that Chen Zhao began learning the traditional art at the age of five, but his parents told him that he could not make a living from calligraphy.
When the young man was choosing a profession, his parents hoped that he would study business, but Chen entered the Hubei Institute of Fine Arts to major in calligraphy. This caused a quarrel in the family.
Instead of working in the garment factory founded by his parents, after graduating from university in 2016, the new specialist opened a calligraphy teaching studio.
Chen's institution accepted its first student two months after opening. However, he became a big problem for his teacher because he was left-handed. After much effort, the student managed to create a masterpiece of "handwriting", after which the studio's business began to improve.
In 2017, his family's factory closed due to poor management, leaving his parents in debt for a total of 20 million yuan.
To help his parents, Chen focused on his calligraphy business, expanding the size of his studio, hiring seven teachers, increasing tuition fees, and enrolling more than 300 students.
He teaches from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. every day, taking an hour-long break at noon.
And by September last year, Chen had paid off all of his parents' debts. Now his father and mother support the calligraphy business, recognizing that the art can indeed make money.
