For many people, the idea of spending 10 days in bed watching their favorite TV series seems pretty tempting. And the European Space Agency (ESA) is ready to pay 5,000 euros for such a vacation! As part of a unique study, volunteers will lie on a water bed for ten days, which will allow them to study the effects of weightlessness on the body.

The experiment, called Vivaldi III, is being conducted at the Medes space clinic at the University Hospital of Toulouse. Its goal is to recreate some of the effects of space flight on the body. Twenty volunteers will be placed in bathtubs covered with waterproof fabric. This will ensure that they are dry and evenly distributed in the water, as explained by the ESA. The participants will be deprived of physical support, a sensation that can be compared to that experienced by astronauts on the International Space Station.

The only downside? Even to the toilet, the participants are transported on a gurney, not allowing them to change their body position.

As the name suggests, Vivaldi III is the third and final part of the Vivaldi experiment, which aims to study the effects of weightlessness on the human body. Unfortunately for women, only men can take part.

The volunteers will spend a total of 21 days in the hospital.

The first five days will include basic medical examinations, followed by a ten-day period on a water bed. The next five days will be spent on measurements and rehabilitation. Another day will be set aside for a follow-up visit 10 days after the end of the experiment. During this period, you will not be allowed to go outside, but you can use your phone and laptop.

"You can communicate with your loved ones as much as you like. Phone and video calls are allowed. However, you will not be able to receive visitors,” the Medes space clinic website says.

“In zero gravity, astronauts’ bodies undergo many changes due to the lack of gravity: they lose muscle and bone density, the shape of their eyeballs may change, and fluid moves to the brain. Dry diving relieves the body of stress, creating conditions similar to zero gravity. The results of this study may also lead to new treatments for patients who are bedridden, the elderly, and those suffering from musculoskeletal disorders,” the ESA explained.
