Tourist Risks Life for Spectacular Selfie (5 photos + 1 video)
A thrill-seeker has climbed Old Harry Rock near Swanage in Dorset, UK. All for a photo shoot at a height of 30 meters.
The footage shows the daredevil descending a ledge, with an abyss and certain death on either side of him. He then takes out his phone and takes a selfie with the sea in the background. Fortunately, his walk ended safely.
Local resident Steve Hogan shared: “When I saw the man on top of the cliff, I thought he was standing too close to the edge. Then he started to come down and I thought, ‘What is this idiot doing?’ I couldn’t believe it. It looked like he was going to fall. It’s a very narrow ledge, it would have been easy for him to slip.”
"He was about 30 meters up, a fall could have been fatal for him. But he really wanted to take a selfie. His friends were left at the top, they looked worried when he disappeared from sight. The tourist really took a risk, but he was lucky. It was noticeable that he was tired and pale."
A Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) spokesman declined to comment on the incident, but noted that there was an active online campaign against such a pastime: “Coastal cliffs seem like the perfect place for a spectacular selfie, and it can be tempting to walk right up to the edge. However, it is worth remembering that a sudden slip or a strong gust of wind could have tragic consequences. A spectacular photo is not worth the risk.”
In May 2021, a 28-year-old British man slipped and fell from Old Harry Rock into the sea. The man got too close to the edge while taking a selfie. A group of kayakers saw the fall and rescued the victim. They helped him get to shore and gave him first aid.
The man was conscious and was rushed to hospital. Despite falling from a great height, he only received bruises.
