A city of the future where you can live your life without setting foot on earth (1 photo + 2 videos)
In the Chinese megacity of Chongqing, which has gone viral thanks to TikTok, residents may never touch the ground due to the city’s unique architectural structure. It is the most densely populated place on the planet, with 32 million people, and its futuristic appearance is reminiscent of scenes from the film Blade Runner.
The city, located in southwest China, has caught the attention of social media users with its multi-level structure, which makes spatial orientation a real challenge. In the central district of Yuzhong, Chongqing, intersecting buildings, bridges and overpasses create a sense of living in a cyberpunk reality.
In one of the popular videos, TikToker @hughchongqing demonstrated how difficult it is to determine what floor you are on: "It seems like I'm standing on a regular square, but if I walk a little further, I'm on the 22nd floor."
Another blogger, Jackson Lu (@journeyofjackson), tried to find the "bottom of the city" by traveling through multi-story buildings. While searching for the lower level, he came across a school that was located below what would seem to be the lowest point, which caused even more surprise.
The architectural features of Chongqing allow for the placement of not only public squares on the roofs, but also gas stations. Guardian journalist Oliver Wainwright, who visited the city, noted that getting around here resembles a labyrinth of stairs, escalators and elevators connecting streets of different levels.
Social media users are amazed by the city's complex layout. "How is it that it doesn't collapse?" commentators ask. Others are surprised how GPS works in such a city: "Maps must have a 3D model of all the streets located one above the other."
The publication notes that Chongqing is an independent municipality, which has allowed it to actively modernize without external influence. Its unique urban planning makes it one of the most unusual and futuristic cities in the world.
