Athletes pedaled as hard as they could for 192 kilometers, only to find out that they had turned past the finish line.

One of the most absurd situations in the history of cycling races occurred in Portugal: the first stage of the prestigious Volta ao Algarve had to be cancelled because the vast majority of athletes turned the wrong way and rode past the finish line. What's most offensive is that this happened just a kilometer before the final line.

It is noted that more than 100 athletes participated in the race. With one kilometre to go, the peloton – the main group of 92 riders – turned onto a parallel road intended for support vehicles. The winner of the race was Italian Filippo Ganna, who with a small group of riders maintained concentration and turned onto the correct road. However, the joy of Ganna and his team was short-lived, as the organisers decided to cancel the results of the 192-kilometre race.

"The Board of Commissars interpreted the rules and, given what happened, decided to cancel the stage, as it considered that sporting justice did not prevail in the end. It is clear that we did not do enough to avoid this outcome, which we deeply regret," the organisers said.

As Volta ao Algarve director Sergio Souza explained, the error was caused by an insufficiently developed signaling system, so most of the athletes "instinctively" followed the escort motorcycle.

"We analyzed several images and tried to understand what led to this. We realized that it was a bunch of small errors. Logically, the organization should take responsibility," Souza said.

It is noted that the winner of the first stage of the cycling race was irritated by the organizers' decision, since he won fairly. Ganna noted that there was no "sporting truth" in the organizers' decision.
