In the US, an opossum ate too much chocolate cake and ended up in a veterinary clinic (3 photos)
The animal is currently undergoing treatment. In a few weeks, the animal will be released into the wild.
The animal wandered into the backyard of one of the state's residents. Kim Doggett said that she put the cake on the table on the patio because there was not enough room in the refrigerator. The woman's son went out into the yard and saw the possum, which by that time had managed to eat almost the entire cake.
At first, Doggett and her family members tried to drive the possum away, but then they saw that it was not moving at all and was breathing heavily. The woman then tried to find out if chocolate was dangerous for the animals, but there was no information about it on the Internet. Doggett knew that the treats were not very good for dogs, so she decided to play it safe.
An animal control officer took the opossum to the Nebraska Wildlife Rehab. The animal was given activated charcoal to neutralize any possible toxicity from the chocolate, and a full medical examination was performed, including x-rays and blood work.
An examination revealed another serious problem - the animal had high levels of lead in its blood. The poisoning was likely caused by the animal eating insects.
The opossum is currently undergoing treatment for an excess of chocolate and lead. The animal must undergo a rehabilitation course and give up chocolate for the time being (according to veterinarians, the animal did not like this at all). By the end of March, the opossum should be released into the wild.
