Scary X-ray of a lover of undercooked meat (4 photos)
An X-ray showed that the man was infected with hundreds of pork tapeworm eggs. And it was all due to a simple mistake while preparing food. The patient went to the doctor when he fell and felt pain in his hip.
American doctor Sam Ghaly shared the man's story and noted that it was "one of the most unusual X-rays he had ever seen."
He explained: "This disease is known as cysticercosis. Essentially, these are cysts of Taenia solium - also known as pork tapeworm."
The infection was caused by eating raw or undercooked pork.
"The cysts can spread throughout the human body. In this patient, they affected the muscles and soft tissues of the thighs and legs," Ghali added.
In this case, the parasites were not life-threatening. They were discovered when the patient was diagnosed with a hip fracture.
However, the cysts can be a problem and even cause death.
The doctor warned: "The problem is that if they get into the brain, it can lead to serious consequences."
This condition is known as neurocysticercosis. The disease leads to neurological symptoms such as headaches, confusion, seizures and even death.
"Always keep clean and wash your hands. And never, under any circumstances, eat raw or undercooked pork," the specialist reminded.
Last year, a man was hospitalized in Florida after suffering from severe headaches for four months. The 52-year-old patient admitted that he had become accustomed to eating raw bacon. A CT scan revealed fluid-filled bubbles in his brain, and doctors diagnosed him with neurocysticercosis.
The man said he had not traveled and lived in a modern, clean home with his wife and cat. It is likely that the tapeworm eggs entered his body through the bacon, and then traveled through the bloodstream from his intestines to his brain.
