The world's largest diesel engine is considered to be the RT-flex96C. It is produced in several versions - from 6 to 14 cylinders, and the largest version resembles a four-story structure. After all, its length is almost 26.6 meters, and its height is 13.5 meters. The total weight of this giant is 2300 tons.





What are you, RT-flex96C!

This engineering giant is produced by Wärtsilä (Finland) and has been produced since 2003. This engine is designed for installation on container ships. The largest 14-cylinder engine was first released in 2006 and was installed on the Emma Mærsk (Denmark). And thanks to this engine, the 398-meter-long vessel is capable of moving 11,000 containers at sea, and each of them weighs 14 tons.

RT-flex96C is an in-line two-stroke turbocharged diesel engine with an installed capacity of 80.8 MW. The torque of this giant is almost 7,603,850 Nm.









At the same time, this engine has a maximum RPM of only 120, which is almost 40 times less than modern passenger cars.

Such a low number of revolutions is due to the design feature, since this diesel is connected to the propeller shaft directly (without gears or a reduction gear).

Seeing such a high fuel consumption, the question arises, why is it needed at all. But if we calculate the fuel consumption per ton of transported cargo, we will see that in fact this is a very economical and one of the cheapest ways to deliver goods from the manufacturer to the consumer.



So such giants are not just exotic. But a very popular unit in international container transportation.
